Land Surveyors need to know Louisiana geography in order to research land titles and records that are located through out the state. The titles and titles are located in court houses in each parish and its parish seat.
Louisiana has parishes while other states have counties. Both parishes and counties are political administrative districts providing law enforcement through sheriffs and providing judicial services through judges. The parish seat is called the parish seat because judges historically sat on benches in court rooms located in the court house.
Each parish has a sheriff while judges travel between judicial districts. Under the police jury system used to govern most Louisiana parishes, the sheriff is the only parishwide elected official. Because he is parishwide, he has more political power and influence than other elected officials. Judges have no enforcement power and so do have as much political power and influence as sheriffs.
